GRID OUTAGE FAQs
My PV/battery system shuts down during a grid outage
Q. Why did my system not back up my home?
A. There could be many reasons for this but if you have large loads on, it could be too much for the battery. Turn off things like AC, dryer and range to reduce the home consumption and reset the batteries by turning the toggle switch
on the right side of the battery off, then back on. The battery will keep trying to back up the home every 5 minutes until the load is low enough to be supported. (Less than 30A total per Powerwall).
Adding a Powerwall is always a good thing but can be tricky because most systems with 1 Powerwall are specifically designed for only 1. When adding a Powerwall we would likely need to add additional solar as well. You can start this process by reaching out to your project developer to help see how we can add more storage.
Q. When running off my solar and battery in a grid-outage situation, why does my solar shut off?
A. This could be from too much power being pushed to the batteries, as in you have more PV than is ideally suited for your battery capacity. You can turn on more mights and maybe a small AC to remedy this situation. Another way to address this issue is to add more Powerwalls to your system. You can start this process by reaching out to your project developer to help see if adding more PV is the right solution.
Q. Why does it look like a surge when my power transfers from HECO to my battery?
A. The Tesla system will normally transfer the power from HECO within about 100-400ms. This can sometimes differ depending on what kind of outage it is. (Surge, Brown Out, Black Out).
